Wisdom teeth
read moreNot everybody has wisdom teeth. Some people have wisdom teeth but they never grow through the gum into their mouth, whilst other people have some or all of wisdom teeth present. Often wisdom teeth come through into a good position, but it is also relatively common that people's wisdom teeth grow at a strange angle or are pushed into adjacent teeth, gum or bone (impacted). If you have wisdom teeth that are only partially through the gum or that are impacted, then they can be very difficult to keep clean and can cause pain or discomfort.
Tooth extractions
read moreUnfortunately if a tooth is very badly broken down or severely infected then it may well require an extraction. Where possible we would look at repairing your tooth with a crown or a filling, but it some cases a tooth will need removing. When you have a tooth out, the exact procedure will depend on the condition and position of the tooth to be extracted. This will be discussed in more detail by your dentist. We advise you to eat prior to your appointment as we will use local anaesthetic to numb the area to allow us to remove the tooth painlessly.
Fillings
read moreYour dentist will first remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area and then fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. There are different materials available to repair your teeth. These include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-coloured fillings) and a silver amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc). For many years silver amalgam was the main material used for fillings, it is a strong material and can still be useful in certain circumstances.
Dental Implants
read moreDental implants can be an ideal solution for a missing tooth, or teeth, if you would prefer something that is fixed in the mouth and is not removable, like a denture. When a Bridges is not possible, dental implants can help to avoid extra strain on teeth either side of the missing tooth. Dental implants can also be used to help stabilise lower full dentures if patients are having problems. Implants require careful planning to ensure there is sufficient bone to support the implants so that they can be placed in the correct position to allow natural replacement of the missing tooth/teeth.
Bridges
read moreOnce it has been fitted the bridge does not need to be removed from the mouth each day, unlike a denture. Your dentist may recommend a bridge if you're missing one or more teeth and would like a fixed replacement. It maybe that you are unhappy with the appearance of the gap where your tooth is missing and a bridge could give a natural appearance. Bridges can be made out of either a combination of metal with tooth coloured porcelain layered over the top, or metal free bridges made entirely of tooth coloured ceramic are now possible in certain situations.
