We try to balance stroke development, confidence building and swimming skills over blocks of 10 sessions and every quarter try and incorporate progress towards the next level of award. Once a child has completed an award they will be provided with a slip with a signature and date to give to parents. They can then hand it over at the tuck shop.

Please ensure you re-new between January and March to ensure your child is a member of the club and benefits from our club membership insurance. Kandel Twin Town
read moreWhitworth and Kandel became twinned in 1966. At a ceremony in Kandel on 6 August 1966, the Twinning Charter was formally signed by the Chairman of the Whitworth Urban District Council, Councillor Frank W Walker, and the Burgermeister of Kandel, Herr Oskar Bhm. Whitworth Swimming Club has organised and participated in a number of exchange visits with Kandel giving our swimmers the opportunity to experience life in the twin town and EEC neighbouring country. Many friendships have been forged over the years and the formation of this website is key to maintaining our links with Kandel.
Objectives
read moreThe aims of the club are to promote the sport of swimming by providing structured teaching and training programs to help swimmers reach their full potential according to their individual levels of ambition, ability and application. Our primary focus is on stroke development, fun and contrasting swimming activities and progression through our groups from the baby pool, to learners to confident / competent lane swimmers.
History
read moreInitially it was only held on Wednesday evenings and children had to be a minimum of 7 years old to join. Amongst the founder members were Jack and Audrey Hoyle who remained staunch organisers and teachers for many many years. At first there was only one qualified teacher and three or four volunteers. In spite of this the club went from strength to strength and we soon had to have Tuesday evenings as well. We also started to take children from the age of five. It was several years before the small pool was built but it soon became very well used by our new members.
Education
read moreFormer senior Ofsted inspector Sir Jim Rose has suggested a curriculum overhaul where lessons should be more focused on preparing children for life outside school. We strongly advise headmasters and teachers to encourage and build on the swimming lessons in Key Stage 1 and 2 of the Education Curriculum. We would also like to ask Headmasters and Teachers to market Whitworth Swimming Club to Key stage 1-2 class groups so as to prepare them for swimming lessons at Key Stage 2. It is evident that primary schools with a regular involvement and attendance at Whitworth Swimming Club perform extremely well in inter-school swimming galas across the Valley.
Awards
read moreThree of these helpers (Alyssa Barker, Heidi & Gemma Wardle) and one of our teachers (Sam Wardle) then went on to successfully complete an RLSS Beach Lifeguard course in Rhyl at the beginning of July. As part of this course as well as CPR & First Aid the candidates have to show their ability to perform rescues in the sea (battling through the waves & Jelly Fish). These rescues involve the use of more familiar rescue aids seen around most swimming pools as well as using paddle boards. There are also two timed swims, 200metres in 4 minutes & 400metres in 8 minutes.
