About Us
read moreStable Close Equine Practice is a modern equine practice focused on providing excellent care for your horses at your yard. We have an extensive range of diagnostic equipment including endoscopes, ultrasound scanners and digital x-ray systems. We have listed some of our services here but there are many others that are not specifically mentioned. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
Strangles
read moreStrangles is a highly contagious, bacterial, respiratory infection caused by Streptococcus equi, which affects horses, ponies and donkeys of all ages. It is always present at a low level within the UK horse population but new cases arise every year. It can be highly contagious and causes significant logistical and economical problems in an infected yard. The aim of this information sheet is to inform you of the clinical signs of strangles and how the bacteria spread between susceptible horses. It also contains information on how to control the infection and hopefully prevent it entering your yard.
Ultrasonography
read moreUltrasonography is a commonly used and useful diagnostic tool in equine practice. Although principally used for orthopaedic scanning of soft tissue such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage, it is also used for many other organs including liver, intestine, kidneys, spleen and eyes. Cardiac ultrasound is a specialist procedure and we work closely with several specialists vets who can perform this when needed. We have invested heavily in high quality ultrasound equipment in order to enable us to obtain the best images without needing to take the horse to a hospital.
Sports Medicine
read moreMany of our patients are athletes who must be fit to compete at the highest level. Keeping your horse sound and injury free is vital to success and we have a great deal of experience in this area. Our aim is to find the right treatment and management to keep your horse competing successfully. Sports medicine is all about optimising performance, preventing injury and promoting recovery from injury. We use many different means to achieve this including careful examination, ridden assessments, lameness diagnostics, assessment of exercise regimes and dietary management.
Endoscopy
read moreEndoscopy is mostly used for examining the airways and stomach, although it also can also be used to examine the oesophagus and bladder. Our endoscopes are mobile, so this procedure can be carried out at your yard rather than bringing the horse to us. We work closely with two specialists vets, Tim Brazil and Kate McGovern who carry out gastroscopy. This is the only way to ascertain if a horse is suffering from gastric ulceration. The endoscope is passed via a nostril and enables visual assessment of the nasal cavities.
Vettings
read moreAll our vets are experienced in pre-purchase examination and have developed a strong reputation in this field. Malcolm Morley has played a lead role in the development of pre-purchase examination in the UK and lectures widely on the subject. He is also chair of the British Equine Veterinary Association's Pre-Purchase Examination Committee. We report to you, the purchaser, the significant findings of our examination as well as discussing any increased risks that might result. The main aim is to help you decide on the horse's suitability for your intended use.
Referrals
read moreWe believe that one of our greatest strengths is the large network of specialist vets to whom we can refer challenging cases. These can be anything from emergency colic and orthopaedic surgery to medical and dental problems. We believe it is best to use a wide range of referral practices and specialists so that you can get the very best care for your horse. We always make referrals taking into account your preference as well as which specialists we recommend. We never take any commision or referral fee for work done outside our practice - our passion is simply finding the best veterinary care.
