In 1920 after serving with the Green Howards Ernest Oswald Race (Ossie) began his own furniture business from the downstairs of the family home in Borough Road, Middlesbrough. Determined and enthusiastic and capable to capitalise on the post war boom Race for Furniture began dealing in 2nd hand furniture, carpets, rugs and hardware. Successful trading continued until the outbreak of war in 1939. Ossie's son, Clive, serving with the RAF would join the business in 1946, after demobilisation.
