Always ask whether there are any additional costs for a sound system, lighting etc. These costs should be explained up-front. You can often reduce costs by arranging your own provider for lights and PA. Consider holding your event on a different day of the week to saturday night. This is the busiest (and therefore most expensive) night for most bands. Definitely strive to book at least 6 weeks in advance of an event. Ask if travel costs are included in the cost. Do supply drink and food for the band - especially if they are traveling long distances.
