The techniques known as Ju-Jitsu or Jiu Jitsu (two different spellings meaning the same martial art) were developed in Japan, some techniques dating back to over 2000 years ago. The words Jiu-Jitsu translate into English as the art of softness or way of yielding. Jiu Jitsu was developed by the Samurai warriors of Feudal Japan and grown into a formidable art of self defence. Due to the difficulty encountered when attacked by an armored opponent, techniques were developed for neutralizing the attacker using joint lock throws and pins.
