Our visitor numbers continue to rise and in 2009/10 we welcomed 856,000 visitors (an increase of 26% on the previous year) and including 50,000 school children. Our global programme of loans - lending objects to other institutions - means that every year, over 3 million people visiting museums and art galleries worldwide see collections that have come from Birmingham. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is housed in a Grade II* listed city centre landmark building.

Tessa Sidey, Curator of Prints and Drawings at BM&AG for nearly 30 years, died on New Year's Day 2011 after a long illness. On her death, Tessa generously bequeathed to the Museum 33 20th-century prints, drawings and studio ceramics from her private collection. An exhibition of these works of art will be in Gallery 20. Featuring large scale, theatrical and visually spectacular work, this exhibition challenges perceptions of what lace can be, involving the visitor in an environment where spaces become fluid and thread creates entirely new boundaries.

Each object or artwork has a minimum suggested donation for you to make - from 10 to 5,000.

BMAG also has a diverse exhibition programme that offers a series of changing exhibitions throughout the year. Information about exhibitions and events can be found on the What's On page. Put your own object under the spotlight - bring it to the museum for our experts to tell you all about it. Sessions are held on the third Wednesday of each month between 1pm and 3pm. They will take place in the Industrial Gallery on the 2nd floor.

read moreDirect access to the ruins and our new community education centre is available on event days or for groups and schools by a pre-booked guided tour. The ruins at Weoley Castle are over 700 years old and are the remains of the moated medieval manor house that once stood here. The site has been inhabited from the 12th century and, according to the Domesday Book, was part of the estates of William Fitz Ansculf. Weoley changed hands several times between 1485 and 1531 when it began to fall into disrepair.
