Woodlands Castle

Woodlands Castle was founded in 1810, and was remodelled and enlarged by Richard Carver c1833 for Mrs Lock. The house originally a farm house is far more elaborate than you would expect from a late eighteenth century early nineteenth century building. With its picturesque fasade in the then fashionable pseudo-Tudor style and its planted pleasure ground it seems to be attempting to be a stately home, designed for public appearance and private pleasure rather then mere accommodation. The house appears in Kelly's Directory of the County of Somerset of 1861 which describes Woodlands, the seat of the Hon.
