The Clare White Gallery
Museum & Art Gallery in Barnsley, South Yorkshire
We're located in the village of Elsecar, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire and sell a huge array of original paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles and jewellery - predominantly produced in the S W. As well as hosting regular temporary exhibitions, our collection of paintings always features an eclectic mix of naive, abstract and figurative pictures. We're the primary outlet for the work of acclaimed St Ives water colourist Clare White (1903 -1997) and the gallery is named in her honour.

read moreWelcome to the Clare White Gallery - the primary outlet for the work of acclaimed St Ives water colourist Clare White (1903 -1997). Our aim is to share our passion and appreciation for White's characterful and accomplished work and champion her place in English art history and in the 21st century art market. The Clare White gallery was opened in 2007 but since 2011 it has been an online gallery only, with occasional touring exhibitions in different parts of the UK. We stock original watercolours - see our Paintings section for those which can be purchased - and a small range of limited edition prints.
read moreWe love to talk about Clare White. She was quite the eccentric and lived her life as a true ‘Edwardian English lady' right through to the 1990s! She attended finishing school in Lucerne, Switzerland, watched goat racing in Barbados, masqueraded as a married French woman in war-torn Paris and travelled the world alone with her easel and paintbox. White was a pioneer as a woman artist - she was one of the first female students allowed to paint life models at college and became the St Ives Art Club's first female president in 1954.
