St Wilfrid's C Of E Church
Churches in Preston, Lancashire
The Village of Ribchester with the outlying hamlet of Stydd are located in the picturesque Ribble Valley in the middle of rural Lancashire. Ribchester grew out of the ruins of the Roman fort of Bremetenacum and the Parish Church of Saint Wilfrid's stands where the principle buildings of the fort would have been. Always a farming community the Village grew significantly in the 17th and eighteenth Centuries through the expansion of the Lancashire cotton industry. The Village can still boast many of the cottages used by the hand loom weavers in the early part of the 17th century but the weaving industry has all but gone.
