In 1505, the incorporation of the Barber-Surgeons of Edinburgh came into being with the granting of its Seal of Cause by the Town Council of Edinburgh (See History of the College) Since then, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has been committed to the maintenance and promotion of the highest levels of surgical practice, through its keen interest in education, training and rigorous examination and through its liaison with external medical bodies. Whilst being keenly aware of its antiquity (the College celebrated its quincentenary in 2005) the College prides itself on its innovation and adaptability.

Lay Advisory Committee
read moreThe Lay Advisory Committee (LAC) exists to contribute a non-clinical perspective to College decision making at every level. The Committee provides advice from a lay perspective on core College activities, and on issues relating to surgery and healthcare. The LAC is primarily a lay, not a patient representative group. The Lay Committee acts as a critical friend to the College, offering strategic advice from a non-institutional perspective. The LAC has an advisory role and reports to the Council, the Chair of the LAC sits on Council.

Surgeons Quarter
read moreSurgeons Quarter promotes, sells and manages all commercial activities held within the College Campus. All profits support the charitable aims of the College which are education, assessment and advancement in surgery. The Playfair Building, dating back to 1832, is ideal for meetings, private dining and gala dinners in beautiful historic rooms. It is also home to the Surgeons' Hall Museums which houses collections of international importance. The Museum offers tours and private viewings to guests attending events if requested.

Events & Courses
read moreThe course aims to provide all the latest information on the new regulations, particularly regarding statutory instruments, additional requirements for informed consent and the importance of the quality management systems and the audit/inspection process. The session will finish on updates to the revised ICH GCP Guidelines E6 (R2) and the planes European Regulation (2017). This course aims to help participants develop competence in procedures commonly carried out by junior orthopaedic trainees in the emergency department, outpatient clinics and in the operating theatre.
