Over the last 4 decades, there have been significant improvements in reducing the levels of decay in the UK population. These levels have now steadied and are in fact increasing. Gum disease is common, affecting 3 out of 4 adults over the age of 35. Indeed, more than half of the teenage population have evidence of some form of gum disease. Gum disease is a larger cause of tooth loss than decay. Gum disease if left untreated will lead to receding gums, loosening and eventually, loss of the teeth.
