Times were hard for working people in 19th century England. In factories, mills, and mines, workers suffered long hours and often dangerous working conditions. Work-related illnesses were common (though they were never labelled as such) and for many, life offered little in the way of material comfort. Nevertheless, in towns and villages throughout Great Britain, ordinary working men, women and kids would often gather in Methodist chapels to join in thankful hymns, fervent prayers, lively preaching and careful study.
