The Woodside Animal Welfare Trust is an animal rehoming charity (registered charity number 299789) located on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon. The foundation of Woodside's broad field of work was begun in 1974 by Carole Bowles. Her significant contributuion to animal welfare was finally recognised in 2000 when she was made an MBE by Her Majesty, The Queen. As well as the young and healthy, our countryside sanctuary always has a selection of much loved resident pets that are unlikely to be adopted, such as the elderly and long-term ill.

We were founded in 1977, a group of like-minded friends decided to do something about the rising numbers of unwanted pets being destroyed in Plymouth. Led by Carole Bowles who, with her husband Dave, ran Fursdon boarding kennels, these friends formed The Thornbury Animal Group. Realising that indiscriminate breeding was at the root of their problem, Carole piloted a spay and neuter programme and the group began its pioneering work.
