read moreDue to the national lockdown, we are temporarily suspending boat dives from TD1 until we are allowed to restart. Our weekly social meetings continue to be held on Zoom. We will not be running Try Dives or conducting pool training until later in 2021. The new compressor is working, but members should contact us first to be shown how to use it (and to get new door code).
News for Members
read moreYou can also read interesting articles published by members here. Check out the latest article on how the spare propeller on the SS Maine was raised back in 1983 (article reproduced from DIVER magazine, courtesy of Terry Blackmore). The old compressor has been getting some views on Facebook Marketplace. It's also been posted on our Facebook page and, since another branch may be our best bet for a sale, we'll put it on the regional and national Facebook pages too (if allowed). The old compressor has been advertised on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.
The Committee
read moreThe club is managed on a voluntary basis by a Committee who are elected each year at the AGM, usually held around April. If you can't meet us face to face (difficult these days), you can send an email to the club if you have any questions or suggestions to make to any Committee members.
Training
read moreThe swimming pool sessions teach you practical skills and allow you to practice them in a controlled environment. Courses are run on-demand and are taught 'in-house' by our volunteer, qualified instructors. These are charged 'at cost' (to cover the cost of pool hire, equipment servicing, etc). During training, the main items of scuba equipment (cylinder, regulators, buoyancy jacket) will be provided as part of the training fee. This equipment is fully serviced and maintained (several new sets were purchased in 2019).
Articles
read moreI didn't know what they were up to when Brendan Jaffa of Torquay BSAC asked if I could take a group of divers out on Likely Lad for an evening dive on the wreck of the SS Maine. They asked to be put down on the stern end - a normal request. Over the next few months we dived the Maine again and again - always on the stern! My suspicions were confirmed on the third dive when they went over the side with cameras, tapes and note pads. Brendan then felt obliged to let me in on his secret: they were going to lift the spare propeller!
