Coming from Italy, Anthony Maturi began sharpening knives and scissors on the now famous bicycle. Realising that this was far from the perfect way to grind, he opened a specialist workshop in Ladypool Road and later moved to the present bigger site at Coventry Road, Small Heath. Professional sharpening is still a major part of todays work and skills have been passed down from Father to Son. It is estimated that to date over 3 million scissors have been sharpened and knives too numerous to count. In the early 1920's, Anthony decided to expand into the new lawnmower market, along with shear and saw sharpening.
