Gardening & Landscaping in St Albans, Hertfordshire
Gardening & Landscaping in St Albans, Hertfordshire I've been treating lawns for more years than I care to remember. My working career began as a groundsman at Lord's Cricket Ground in 1987 to look after and maintain the hallowed turf. A natural progression into the private sector ensued smoothly with lots of the players requesting my services to treat their own residential lawns. By word of mouth mainly, it wasn't long before golf clubs, bowls clubs and tennis clubs sought my services.

Lawn Worm Casts
read moreFirst of all worms do not eat dirt, but they do make casts (poo) which are not pretty to look at on your lawn. Worms eat bacteria, fungi and they love organic matter such as plants, fruit, compost heaps of cut grass, potato peelings and decaying animals, if you have any. Worms are essential in gardens because they keep the soil soft and full of nutrients which are good for your plants. If you have earthworms in your garden, it is sign of healthy ground. Worms or Earthworms, are an important part of British natural history because they add air to the soil and make it richer in nutrients.
Lawn Care & Treatment
read moreHedgehogs, ducks, chickens, frogs and toads are all predators of snails and slugs. Hedgehogs eat slugs, beetles, caterpillars etc. and are an excellent addition to pest control strategies in the garden. They can be encouraged by providing sleeping areas such as piles of leaves and garden waste and leaving out a dish of meat in the form of cat or dog food, chicken leftovers and other sources of protein and a bowl of water. Piles of garden rubbish should be carefully moved and inspected before burning to detect any sheltering hedgehogs.
Disease Treatment
read moreThere are many Turf Diseases that you could find on your lawn and need to be treated with a Fungicide, the most common ones that you will find on your lawn I have listed below. Also known as Snow Mould this can be spotted by Small, dark Brown patches of dead grass, Becoming straw and pale coloured as the disease progresses. This is a very common disease and can be identified by pink and reddish needles on tip of grass blade. This Turf Disease is easy to spot as it shows more on lawns. The grass can appear green but also turn yellow.
Lawn Scarification
read moreScarification removes thatch, the accumulation of dead and decaying organic matter at the base of the living roots and leaves. Scarifying or raking in your lawn maintenance programme should be done in Spring and has several benefits - preventing the build up of thatch and getting rid of surface debris. A second rake in Autumn is essential to remove all the fallen leaves, ageing grass plants and debris. The lawn is then ready for re-seeding.
Special Offers
read moreOne of these which is very popular, if you have a lot of moss on your lawn and compaction. I would recommend that first we apply a moss killer, a week later we scarify the lawn, aerate it and feed it at the same time. This will give it a good boost as the fertiliser granules go down the holes after the aeration which means that they get to the roots of the plant ( grass) to give a greater impact and a good boost.
Lawn Aeration
read moreDuring the summer months in particular, lawns suffer from continual use - be that children, sports, or BBQs - these all combine to cause surface compaction. Lawn maintenance is crucial to prevent damage. This compaction impedes drainage and it is harder for air, water and fertiliser to penetrate into the roots. As such, lawn aeration during the Spring and Autumn, helps allow the soil temperature to rise more quickly and the surface to literally 'breathe'. Unlike other Lawn Treatment Companies, we can Aerate your lawn whenever we feel it is suitable rather then tellyou it cant be done until the Autumn.
CastClear
read moreNobody likes to see worm casts on our lawns, but we like having worms in our gardens and soil because they do an awful lot of good. However, balancing these two facts has, up to now, been very difficult due to the fact that all lawn treatments to get rid of worm casts has been by use of nasty chemicals that kill worms. CastClear works by creating an organic layer in the lawn that worms don't like to penetrate. As a result of this, the worms don't surface and are not harmed and neither is your lawn.
Lawn Mowing
read moreThe first principle is mowing height. A lawn cut at the correct height has more ability to produce food for itself, will stay greener in adverse conditions, will reduce weed germination and is more resistant to diseases. Weeds and weedy-type grasses need plenty of sun and heat to sprout. Taller grass shades the soil and is one of the best weed prevention tools that can be used. As much as possible, your grass should be at least 1 inches after it has been mowed. This is not, unfortunately, a "bowling green" appearance, but it will result in a much healthier and vigorous lawn.
