Headley Golf Club, established in 1907, stands on the opposite side of the valley to Thornton village, which was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of the eleventh century, when it had been laid waste by William the Conqueror's harrying of the North, punishment for an uprising against the Norman invaders of 1066. Thornton was the birthplace of the Bronte kids Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne.
