There are lots of things to arrange before you leave, and the last thing you need is a passenger without a passport. Animal passports can take a number of weeks to obtain, depending on the vaccinations your companion has had, so you're recommended to begin the process of sorting a passport for your pet at least six weeks before you plan to travel. It's important to remember that while on holiday your companion may be exposed to health conditions that aren't present in this country.

However, the really bad news is that if your companion gets a parasitic infestation, you and your family are at risk too. Fleas are the most common type of parasite to affect household pets. As well as causing discomfort for animals and humans alike (they survive by drinking warm blood), they can have up to 50 offspring each day, making them extremely difficult to get rid of. In most cases, sore itchy spots caused by flea 'bites' are the worst damage these pesky parasites will cause.

It's important to ensure that your companion could be safely returned to you should they ever find themselves anywhere other than by your side. Identification tags or collars may fall off or be intentionally removed, however, a microchip is inserted beneath an animal's skin between their shoulder blades. It is roughly the size of a grain of rice and can be fitted relatively painlessly in a matter of minutes without the need for anaesthetic.
