There are many species of wood-rotting fungi that may attack timber. The most common include the True Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans and wet rots such as the Cellar fungus, Coniophora puteana and Mine Fungus, Fibroporia vaillantii. The fungi release spores which then settle on damp wood. Then, the spores germinate and evolve fine, thread-like filaments called hyphae. Each hyphae releases enzymes; these enzymes break down wood cells which inevitably causes a loss in timber strength.
