Inclusive Sailing for All Abilities
Established in 2005 by six disabled sailing enthusiasts, the Disabled Sailing Association (DSA) is a Torquay-based charity dedicated to providing accessible seagoing sailing experiences for individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to ensure that physical limitations do not prevent anyone from enjoying the freedom and camaraderie of sailing. We operate two specially adapted Class 'A' ocean-going yachts, Freedom and Free Spirit, both equipped with wheelchair ramps and compliant with RNLI safety standards. Our volunteer crew, comprising RYA-qualified skippers and trained personnel with DBS clearance, facilitates inclusive sailing trips in Torbay and beyond, including Plymouth, Dartmouth, and international destinations.

As an RYA Sailability affiliate, we prioritise safety, accessibility, and social engagement, offering year-round opportunities for over 200 members with diverse disabilities. Our non-profit model relies entirely on donations and volunteer contributions, ensuring our services remain free to participants. By collaborating with specialist agencies, we support individuals with conditions such as autism, Parkinsons disease, and chronic illnesses, fostering confidence and community through shared maritime experiences.

Services
Adaptive Sailing Trips
We provide tailored sailing experiences for individuals with disabilities aboard specially adapted yachts. Our trips promote independence and social interaction through hands-on participation. Wheelchair access and safety equipment ensure accessibility for all.
Wheelchair Accessible Boats
Our Class 'A' yachts feature ramps and safety modifications for wheelchair users. Designed to RNLI standards, they enable safe navigation for passengers with mobility challenges while maintaining ocean-going capabilities.
RYA Training Courses
We offer RYA-certified training programs for disabled members, delivered by qualified instructors. Courses focus on practical skills development and confidence-building in a supportive environment.
Winter Sailing Opportunities
While our main season runs April-October, we provide winter sailing for experienced members. These trips combine crew training with limited participant access during favourable weather conditions.
Charity Fundraising Events
We organise events like the Eddystone Challenge Pursuit to raise awareness and funds. These activities engage the local community and highlight our members' abilities through competitive sailing.
