Supporting Mental Health in Liverpool's Communities
Mary Seacole House has been Liverpools leading Mental Health charity for multicultural communities since 1991. Founded to address racial inequalities in mental health provision, we provide culturally sensitive advocacy, training, and support services for diverse communities. Our team of experienced professionals and multilingual volunteers deliver person-centred care, helping over 500 individuals annually navigate complex systems while promoting inclusion and belonging. We collaborate with healthcare providers, educational institutions, and local authorities to improve mental health equity. Our advocacy team contributes to national policy development, including the Mental Health Act reforms.

With over three decades of experience, we combine deep sector knowledge with practical support services to address systemic inequalities. Our expertise extends to cultural competency training, crisis intervention, and community-led initiatives that empower marginalised groups. Recognised with the Mental Health Change Maker Community Impact Award 2023, we maintain authority through our pioneering work in race and mental health. Services
Multicultural Mental Health Advocacy
Our advocacy service empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds to navigate mental health systems. We provide culturally sensitive support that helps service users understand their rights and challenge inappropriate treatment. Our advocates work directly with healthcare providers and statutory services to ensure fair access to care while addressing systemic inequalities in mental health provision.
Cultural Competency Training
We deliver specialist training to healthcare professionals on cultural sensitivity in mental health care. Our programs address racial disparities in diagnosis and treatment while equipping practitioners with tools to improve engagement with minority communities. Training includes real-world case studies and practical strategies for creating inclusive healthcare environments that respect diverse cultural needs.
Community Support Services
Our community-led initiatives provide holistic mental health support through therapeutic activities and peer networks. We offer safe spaces for individuals to connect while addressing social determinants of mental health. Services include language support, housing assistance, and crisis prevention programs that help maintain community stability and reduce hospital admissions.
Language Support Services
We provide multilingual support in over 27 languages through trained volunteers and staff. Our service includes document translation, interpretation assistance, and culturally adapted mental health information materials. This ensures equal access to services for non-English speakers while improving communication between service users and healthcare providers.
Crisis Intervention
Our crisis intervention team offers immediate support during mental health emergencies. We work with statutory services to develop safety plans and ensure appropriate care while minimising hospitalisation. Our approach focuses on cultural understanding and trauma-informed practices to de-escalate situations and connect individuals with ongoing support networks.
