Established in 1964 when it opened its Colchester Campus, the University has since grown in both reputation and size, developing a worldwide reputation for top-quality teaching and research. It now has campuses in Southend-on-Sea and Loughton. There are more than 8, 000 students, representing over 130 countries, studying at our three campuses. Academic departments span the humanities, social sciences, science and engineering, and law and management.

Before you start
read moreOnline Registration is now open. All new students are required to register online with the University before starting to attend any teaching (remotely or in-person). You will be able to indicate whether you are starting your degree on campus or online on the Student Study form in your myEssex student portal. This will remain live all year round so that you can update it at any point if your circumstances change. As registration is now open you are encouraged to complete the online task as soon as possible and in advance of your course start date in order not to miss any teaching.

For anyone who is unable to join us in person, our new ways of teaching will allow them to start their courses - with a view to joining us in person as soon as possible.

We will follow all national and international guidance on the reintroduction of more students and staff to our campuses. Social distancing measures will be clear and easy to understand across our campuses. This will include markings on the ground to ensure queues remain distanced to screens and dividers in study areas to ensure everyone can keep apart safely.

New Students

Whether you are arriving at our campuses or studying remotely, we've got everything you need to make sure you have an amazing time. Following the latest Government guidelines, we are currently restricting the number of students allowed to start face-to-face teaching to subjects where a face-to-face component is absolutely essential, with most students not being permitted to return to on-campus university teaching.
