Hello, my name is Brett Halliday and I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist. Cataract surgery is precision surgery. The cataract is removed through an incision, less than one 8th of an inch across, which is crafted so that it is self-sealing and so doesn't require any sutures. During the operation, the lens capsule (a membrane much less than one thousandth of an inch thick) is modified so that it can hold the lens implant securely within the eye.
