SHS Freight services was established in 1923 as Direct Motor Services (Sheffield) ltd, and for 30 years the enterprise developed as a transport agency, undertaking haulage work for firms operating in many sectors of industry and commerce. During the fifties, however, the firm chose to diversify into warehousing and accordingly built two warehouses in Sheffield. The success of the venture led to the purchase of a 4 acre site on the Eastwood Tradind Estate in Rotherham, and in 1960 the firm changed their name to Sheffield Haulage and Storage limited.
