The New Forest, now a National Park is recoginised as one of the most unique and important wilderness areas of Western Europe. It consists of 93, 000 acres of woodland, open heaths and grassy lawns which is all that remains of a primeval forest that once covered Southern England. Commoners still graze their ponies, cattle and donkeys, exercising the Right which goes back at least 900 years to the time of William the Conqueror. The New Forest is a refuge for a huge range of flora and fauna including five species of deer and numerous species of rare birds.
