Harpenden Mencap is a local independent charity for people with a learning disability and their families. We work to to reach support, education, housing, jobs, and recreational opportunities for people with learning disabilities, and to provide supportive services to their families. Our service is possible only through the often unseen aid of our Volunteers, Staff and Members, through our many generous donors and across the goodwill of the community. Harpenden Mencap is immensely grateful for this support.

read moreWe are a self-funding, independent charity which has grown our provision and services over many years to reflect the needs of our local community and is affiliated with Royal Mencap. Harpenden Mencap is proud of the range of services we offer to those we support including; a range of residential services, a variety of active, lively social clubs and work experience in our popular and busy shop. We continue to offer support during these difficult times and are grateful to have such a dedicated and resilient team of front-line keyworkers.

read moreEight local parents of children with a learning disability meet at the instigation of Judy Fryd, to discuss forming the Society. On 18th March 1959 the Society is inaugurated with twenty members and funds of 30.00. Fundraising begins, followed by organised activities such as outings, parties and a playgroup. The vision of Harpenden Mencap is realised with the opening of Stairways by Lord Renton, to provide short-term care for 10 children at a time. The Residential service at Stairways opens and 8 people gradually move into their new homes.
