Our eyes act like a window on the world enabling the brain to build a picture. In some ways the eye is like a camera with a lens system at the front, the cornea and crystalline lens, that focuses light entering it to form an image on a film at the back, the retina. From there the eye works more like a digital camera, converting the image into electrical signals which pass down nerve fibres to the brain where they are processed to provide a picture in our consciousness.
