The founder of the Peculiar People, James Banyard, was a ploughman's son born on the 31st January 1800 in the tiny market town of Rochford, in Southeast Essex. This part of Essex was given over to agriculture, and was, with other parts of the eastern counties, the corn garner of England. Its politics were conservative, its religion earnestly non-conformist, a bastion of the Puritan cause from Elizabethan times. The Peculiar People were to prove that, even in the 19th century, Puritanism and religious controversy were not dead there. He married one Susan Garnish but his habits continued and he was the despair of his wife.

(Romans 3:23) The human race is enslaved by sin and helpless to save itself, as Jesus told us in John 8:34: ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.'
