Acupuncture forms part of a system of medicine which has developed over 3000 years. The Traditional Chinese Medicine model is built on the principle that, in health, the body's energies are balanced and flow smoothly through channels. In Chinese medicine, any illness or symptom is associated with an imbalance of this energy, or Qi (pronounced chee) and the Qi must be rebalanced to restore health. Chinese medicine describes the sensation of pain as an obstruction, or stagnation, of Qi and strives to restore its flow to reduce pain. It is the job of a traditional acupuncturist to treat the underlying cause of pain not just the pain itself.
