At present in the UK, anyone at all, qualified or not, can call themselves a counsellor, a psychotherapist or some sort of a psychological therapist. This matters that a wealth of very inadequately qualified, and all too often actually unqualified, people advertise themselves as therapists. Fortunately this sorry state of affairs will change in 2011 when the therapy professions will be Statutorily Regulated by the UK Health Professions Council. This will mean that it will then be illegal for unqualified people to use titles such as Counsellor, Psychotherapist etc.
