The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers' Mart ltd was established in 1926 by a group of local farmers. Since that time, the principal activity of the firm has been selling livestock, mainly cattle and sheep. In 1981 the firm was reregistered to become a Public ltd Company. Sales of livestock have been built up through the years and Longtown Mart is now the biggest centre in the country for sales of sheep. Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers? Mart P. L. C. Took over the livestock auctioneering business of Thomson, Roddick & Laurie Ltd.
