Chester Golf Club

Golf Courses & Equipment in Chester, Cheshire
Golf Courses & Equipment in Chester, Cheshire Starting with about 107 members it appears that the club united the office of President and Captain in the early years and two notables who held these honours were the Duke of Westminster and W. E. Gladstone! However from as early as 1895 a cloud no larger than a man's hand threatened the club. The activities of the Summers and Sons Steelworks had necessitated the moving of the platform built for the club by the Railway Company and by 1898 several of the golf links were swallowed up by the works and even the old clubhouse building.

History
read moreMuch to the astonishment of club officials, in 1991 the club received congratulations from the R & A on reaching our Centenary. As far as we knew, the club had been formed in 1901 and not 1891! The matter was soon cleared up when research brought up the fact that a Chester Golf Club had indeed been founded in 1891, but it had never had constitutional links with our club. Our club came into being when a six-hole course was laid out on land owned by a Mr Ithell, a farmer at Upton Hall. This was adjacent to, and just north of, the then County Asylum which later became the Deva Hospital, and is now part of the Countess of Chester Hospital.
