The term Osteopath was 1st used by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 to describe a philosophy and practice of healthcare that he had developed. Still was the 1st person to put forward a rational explanation as to why biomechanics (how the musculo-skeletal system works) were so important in maintaining health and well being. The spinal cord can be described as an extension of the brain, which controls all bodily functions such as digestion and breathing, not just movement. Any interference to the nerves passing to or from the brain via the spinal cord must affect normal function of the body.
