Dietitian in Glasgow, Scotland Anne Penman and her husband Ron were both heavy smokers for over 20 years and didn't seriously try to quit until Ron's health became a major issue in 1987 when he had his 1st heart attack at the age of 39. He was advised by his heart specialist to stop smoking immediately. They both made a few half-hearted attempts to quit without success. Ron's health continued to deteriorate and in 1991, he suffered a major heart attack which left him hospitalized for 12 weeks and resulted in a triple bypass operation.
