These rules usually set out what should be done if a document for use in a specific State is to be signed and Notarised outside of the State and outside of the United States. In some cases, additional steps may need to be taken. A few States have particular specifications (such as the need for an Apostille). An Apostille is an official certificate from the UK Government which confirms that a Notary is duly licensed to practice in England and Wales and are issued by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

read moreWhen you have been asked to get a Power of Attorney notarised, you are probably granting a power of attorney to a friend, relative, lawyer or business associate overseas to enable that person (the attorney) to conduct business overseas on your or your company's behalf. The actions your attorney will take and the legal documents which the attorney will sign on your behalf, will likely end up in a public authority of some sort, for example, a Court or Land Registry. It will be this final recipient of the documents who will request that, the Power of Attorney is notarised, and legalised, if necessary.

After seeing your notary, you can then get that notary stamp, seal and signature confirmed by taking it yourself to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and (if needed) the relevant consulate.

Overseas Authorities such as immigration offices, employers or universities want to know that your award is from a UK Institution and reliable. They require a Notary to either verify the award or certify a true copy of the original. For example, an Apostille from the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office is often required and in some instances, further Consulate Legalisation may be required.
