Many of the major towns of the area have a history dating back to the Anglo-Saxons, though little evidence of this remains. Middlesbrough, the only totally urbanized town of the conurbation, owes much of its heritage to Vikings. A factor which is difficult to discern given the industrialization which has taken hold over the last two centuries. Quite remarkably for a town with such an ancient heritage, it only has a single Grade I listed building dating from the late 17th century.
