Abbey Baptist Church

Churches in Reading, Berkshire
Churches in Reading, Berkshire We're a town-centre congregation worshipping in an area where there is considerable commercial and domestic redevelopment. The church was the 1st Baptist Church in Reading and was established in 1640, a time of great social, civil, political and religious unrest. Times have changed and we currently have moved our meeting place several times through the years, yet we're dedicated to the same essential task to which those early Baptists set their hands - prayer, worship, mutual care and the proclamation of the nice news of Jesus Christ.

About Us
read moreOur Sunday services start at 10.30am. For those who are unable to join us in person, you can still share in our worship by using our home-based service sheets. These can be used at a time that suits you. We continue to celebrate the Lord's Supper on the first and third Sunday mornings of the month.
What we believe
read moreOn the first or second Sunday of the year, the church renews its Covenant with the Lord and with each other. The Covenant is an affirmation of what we believe. This revised form of the Covenant was authorised by the Church on December 15th, 1949, to take the place of revised form dated January 27th, 1938, and is to be interpreted and understood in the terms of the full Covenant, drawn up by the Church, then meeting in Hosier's Lane in 1779. An amendment to paragraph 3 was authorised by the Church on October 23rd, 1979.

375 Years
read moreIn 2015 Abbey Baptist Church celebrated its 375th birthday and a number of special events have marked the event. The shortest move of all took place in 1979 when we moved over the Holy Brook into our current premises in Abbey Square, on the site of the Bakery, Mill House and Stables of Reading Abbey. 2019 marks 40 years in the current building. Our desire and purpose is to continue to share the love that God has shown for us in Jesus with each other and with the people in the community around us.
